Post-impression event types

Clients accessing log-level data via REDS refer to the PostImpressionEventType column to determine what each row in the feed represents. A guide for interpreting this data is below to help in better understanding campaign performance.

Many of these events are standard VAST events, such as VideoStart and VideoComplete. There are also a few standard Moat events, such as CreativeIsTrackable and CreativeWasViewable.

ID to event type mappings: VAST events (included)

The following table lists each event type ID that appears in the PostImpressionEventType column.

NOTE: Despite their names, these event types also map standard DAAST audio events.

IMPORTANT: Due to Oracle Advertising's decision to sunset their pre- and post-bid products, Grapeshot and Moat, starting September 30, 2024, our Moat metrics no longer receive new data. See Grapeshot and Moat deprecation by Oracle.

Moat viewability metrics (opt-in to The Trade Desk Moat viewability integration - fees apply)

PostImpressionEventType ID 20 is shared for both CreativeIsTrackable and CreativeWasViewable.

ID Type Definition
20 CreativeIsTrackable Moat was able to track this creative
20 CreativeWasViewable This creative was viewable by Moat standards

NOTE: Even though it may be logical to expect both CreativeIsTrackable and CreativeWasViewable to be set to true for the same impression ID, it is never the case. If either of the two fields is set to true, the other will always be set to false.

Interpret and analyze post-impression event type data

In one feed file, there is usually about one minute of change between first event and last event. REDS is delivered in near-real-time, so we recommend looking at wider data sets to get more accurate performance insights.

Calculate video completion rate

Review 7-10 days' worth of data to identify which PostImpressionEventTypes are being returned. Please refer to the above mapping tables for IDs and definitions of PostImpressionEventType.

You can use PostImpressionEventType to understand the performance of your video creatives.

Step 1: Calculate Total Number of Video Starts

Filter to records with a PostImpressionEventType value of "1". The sum of the filtered VideoEventStart values is equal to the total number of Video Starts.

Sum = 1,213 Video Starts

Step 2: Calculate Total Number of Video Completions

Filter to records with a PostImpressionEventType of "5". The sum of the filtered VideoEventComplete is equal to the total number of Video Completions.

Sum = 1,041 Video Completions

Step 3: Calculate Video Completion Rate

Divide the total number of Video Completions by the total number of Video Starts and multiply by 100 to calculate the Video Completion Rate.

1,041 Video Completes / 1,213 Video Starts x 100 = 85.8% Video Completion Rate

Calculate Moat Viewability Rate

PostImpressionEventType ID 20 is shared for both CreativeIsTrackable and CreativeWasViewable

To calculate Moat viewability:

  1. Calculate the sum of values in the CreativeIsTrackable column.
  2. Calculate the sum of values in the CreativeWasViewable column.
  3. Use the following formula: CreativeWasViewable Total / CreativeWasTrackable Total = Moat Viewability Rate

Calculate Moat Video Viewability and Video Playing Times

To calculate the amount of time that the video was playing or viewable:

  1. Group the data by impression ID.
  2. Identify the max value of VideoViewableTimeInSeconds or VideoPlayTimeInSeconds per bid request ID. Every row is a distinct event and as a user continues to watch a video there will be multiple events for one impression. Using the sum of the row values may be greater than the total length of the video.
