Third-party data rates
Here’s what you need to know about data rates:
- In both syndicated and custom taxonomies, data rates must be assigned as hybrid rates that use a percentage of media cost with a maximum CPM cap. For details, see Hybrid pricing.
- After you create a data element, be sure to assign a rate to it within two hours.
- Data rates are submitted in batches using the POST /v3/datarate/batch endpoint when integrating your third-party data.
- To specify eligible buyers for your segments, you need to use rate levels:
- System rate level for syndicated taxonomies
- Partner or advertiser rate levels for custom taxonomies
- Each data segment typically has only one rate assigned to it directly in the taxonomy.
- You can assign multiple rates to shared data segments.
- Be sure to associate a data segment with only one brand. In the data management platform (DMP), buyers can filter segments only by brand, not by provider. A data segment associated with multiple brands will appear multiple times in the DMP, once for each name, logo, and rate of the associated brand.
- Updates to system-level data rates in syndicated taxonomies and special use cases require approval from The Trade Desk Data Partnerships Team. For details, see Data rate submission and update considerations.
Rate levels
A rate level specifies to whom the segment is available at the specified rate. Here's what you need to know about data rates:
- There are three types of rate levels that you can set in the
RateLevelproperty of the POST /v3/datarate/batch endpoint. - Creating and updating data elements and rates require approval from The Trade Desk Data Partnerships team if they meet a certain criteria based on their rate-level (system or advertiser).
IMPORTANT: All data rates must be assigned as hybrid rates. This means that you must set the
RateTypeproperty toHybridand provide values for bothCPMRateandPercentOfMediaCostRateproperties. For details, see Hybrid pricing.
The following table lists each data rate type, the criteria in which a data element or rate requires approval, who the segment is available to, and the submission period for how often you can update your rates.
| Rate Level | Taxonomy Type | Segment Availability | Rates Allowed per Segment | Rate Type | Approval for Rate Updates | Batch Frequency Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| System | Syndicated | Available to all buyers in the DMP. | One | Hybrid | Required for the first system rate submitted for a brand. For subsequent rate updates, required only for extreme rates. For details, see Data rate approval criteria. | No limitations. NOTE: If you're blocked from uploading, contact your Technical Account Manager. |
| Partner | Custom | Available only to the partner specified by PartnerId and all advertisers within that partner. |
One per partner | Hybrid | Required only for extreme rates. For details, see Data rate approval criteria. | No limitations. TIP: Submit larger batches less often rather than smaller batches more often. |
| Advertiser | Custom | Available only to the advertiser specified by AdvertiserId.Here's what you need to know: NOTE: You need additional permissions to set rates at this level. For details and access, contact your Technical Account Manager. |
One per advertiser | Hybrid | Required only for extreme rates. For details, see Data rate approval criteria. | Same as at the Partner level. |
Multiple rate level precedence
When multiple rate levels apply to a segment, the most specific one takes precedence. The order of rate specificity from most general to most specific is System > Partner > Advertiser. For example, if a segment has two rates specified, at the system and partner levels, the partner rate will be applied because it is more specific.
Data rate submission and update considerations
You can create or update data rates by submitting them in batches using the third-party data rate Platform APIs.
Here’s what you need to know about submitting data rates:
- Be sure to send your rate changes before 8:00 PM UTC. This increases the likelihood that your batch will be processed and put into effect by the following day UTC.
- Rate update batches are sent for a combination of a provider and brand IDs.
- Each batch can include one rate update or many, and the request can include updates across rate levels.
- If utilizing both a syndicated and a custom taxonomy, it's best to send rate updates in separate batches for different rate levels.
- For each rate level, send rate updates in as few batches as possible.
- After submission, data rate batches are processed during a designated processing window that typically occurs at the end of day UTC.
- During the processing window, you will receive a processing status for the rates you submitted.
- After your data rates are processed, your segments become available in the DMP immediately after the processing window closes (next day UTC).
- If your data brand does not leverage rate inheritance and your segments are priced directly, you may qualify for the processing fast pass.
Fast pass for data rate processing
If your data brand has been enabled for segment-level pricing (which means it does not leverage rate inheritance), you might qualify for the processing fast pass. With fast pass, your data rates are processed immediately, bypassing the processing window, and made available in the DMP within six hours.
To qualify for the processing fast pass, the following requirements must be met:
- Each segment must be assigned its own rate rather than inheriting one.
- Segments must not have previously had a rate that was at a higher-level than the rate you want to assign. For example, if you want to assign an advertiser-level rate, but the segment previously had a partner-level rate assigned to it, the batch would not qualify for the fast pass.
- You must have approval from The Trade Desk Data Partnerships team.
FAQs
The following is a list of commonly asked questions about third-party data rates.
Can I set rates for segments that aren't buyable?
Yes, however, non-buyable segments will not be purchasable in the platform, and you will still need to assign rates to all of your buyable segments.
Can I change the rate type for a segment after it is set?
All data rates must be assigned as hybrid rates. To change the current rate to hybrid, make a POST /v3/datarate/batch request for the segment you want to update with the RateType property set to Hybrid and provide values for both CPMRate and PercentOfMediaCostRate properties.
How can I view all of the partner- and advertiser-level rate cards I've created?
To view partner- and advertiser-level rate cards by partner or advertiser, use the POST /v3/datarate/query endpoint. If you would like to view all partner- and advertiser-level rate cards you've created, please contact your Technical Account Manager for a comprehensive list.
Can I use a currency other than USD?
To explore your options for setting data rates in other currencies, please contact your Technical Account Manager.
