Updated JavaScript SDK

January 26, 2024

To improve the user and branding experience, we've released version 4 of our JavaScript SDK, which offers new design and styling options. You can install it from the OpenPass CDN or NPM.

This SDK has the following new features and major updates, including breaking changes if you decide to upgrade.

Sign-in button styling options

The Sign In with OpenPass button now has many styling options to ensure the right look and feel for your website, including the following:

The SDK automatically renders the button through a programmatic JavaScript call or HTML API. For more information, see the following pages.

Name Description
API reference guide A full list of Sign In with OpenPass button options and parameter names.
Sign-in button samples A visual reference of many of the styling options rendered.

Inline sign-in form

The new openPassClient.renderInlineSignInForm method can render an inline sign-in form in an iframe within a web page. This option differs from the standard OpenPass sign-in form by placing the organization's logo and display name on the first lines of the sign-in form, not next to the OpenPass brand.

For a full list of inline sign-in form options and parameter names, see the API reference guide.

Sign in response.originating uri property

The SignInResponse type returned from the openPassClient.handleAuthenticationRedirect method and popup-success callbacks now contains a property called originatingUri. This is the originating window URI the user was on when the authentication flow was initiated. It can be used to redirect users back to the original page they came from when handling redirect callbacks.

For details on SignInResponse parameters, see the API reference guide.

Breaking changes

Here's what you need to know about the latest code modifications if you are upgrading to this new version. There is no requirement to upgrade, and we have no plans to deprecate older versions.

Change Type Affected Area Change Description Notes
Parameter name change openPassClient.renderSignInButton options in the JavaScript API textType to text The HTML API continues to use the parameter name data-text.
Default value change Sign-In button size x-large to large Applies to both JavaScript and HTML APIs.
Behavior change This behavior applies to the following methods:
  • openPassClient.signInWithPopup
  • openPassClient.renderSignInButton
  • openPassClient.renderInlineSignInForm
The options.redirectUri parameter is now optional when using the popup flow. The redirect URI was defaulting to the current page URI, which sometimes caused authentication failures because the current page was often missing from the configuration for valid redirect URIs.
If the redirect URI is provided and the popup window fails to open, the popup flow will fall back to the redirect mode. If not, an SdkError error will be given to help with troubleshooting.

To install the SDK and use the new features and options, see the JavaScript quickstart guides. If you need implementation examples, see the OpenPass Sample Sites repository in GitHub.
